Project 2

Design a garage door opener for a two-car garage door. Power transmission should be through power screw. Here are some suggested design steps:

i.         Find out the weight of a typical sectional aluminum two-car garage door.

ii.       Select a power screw from a supplier. The length of the screw should be related to the total travel.

iii.      Perform all force calculations needed for this screw.

iv.     Select a nut for the screw. Ensure that stresses in screw and nut are within allowable limits.

v.       Calculate the rotational velocity of the motor based on what you consider as a reasonable speed of the door travel.

vi.     Select a motor that fits within your torque and speed requirements.

vii.    Design a safe enclosure for the garage door opener. Ensure that the enclosure is rigidly attached to the ceiling by selecting appropriate bolts.
