ME 440

Fall 2014

Project 1

The following data are taken from McMaster-Carr ( http://www.mcmaster.com/#adjustable-pliers/=tnjkcq ).

Design a standard adjustable self-gripping pliers (not necessarily identical to the one below)  with the following specifications:

·         Overall length: 6”

·         Maximum jaw opening: 1¼”

·         Jaw length: 1”.

·         Number of positions: 6

The major design steps are:

·         Assume that loads are static (use the worst-case scenario).

·         Use an appropriate human factors handbook to obtain suitable dimensions for the wrench.

·         You are to choose materials and dimensions such that the machine will not fail due to any possible combinations of stresses.

·         Use the rapid prototyping machine to create a model of your design (Half-scale).

Note: You may need to disassemble a pliers to better understand its workings.
