MEG 440
Fall 2003
Project #1
Design a hand-operated hydraulic lift and tilt drum lifter that is
comparable to the one shown below (source: http://www.mcmaster.com/
). You are to choose materials and dimensions such that components of the lift will
not fail due to normal operating conditions. The following are brief overview
of the major design steps:
a. Create
a sketch of your overall design that includes all relevant components.
b. Use
principles of statics to find the maximum hydraulic
cylinder force needed to lift the load. Alternatively, use Working Model to determine
the hydraulic cylinder force over the range of motion.
c. Use
the results of step (b) to find a hydraulic cylinder and accessories that
matches your demands. Follow and document selection procedure. Be sure that the
cylinder will no buckle under the load.
d. Design
the remaining components of your lift including hinges.
e. Create
a set of engineering drawings that can be used to manufacture the lift. It is
preferred to use solid modeling at this step.
f.
Create list of components as explained in the first
handout of the semester (http://www.me.unlv.edu/~mbt/440/Project_Format.html
).

Hydraulic
muscle makes it easy to raise and tilt 360° in either
direction full 55-gallon drums up to 800-lbs. and half-filled drums
up to 500 lbs. Use with steel drums only. Hinged saddle securely holds
loaded drum in position as it is tilted, drained, and lowered.
Trucks have a heavy-duty, welded steel tubing
frame, and a screw-down floor lock to keep units stationary. A hand lever
adjusts the hydraulic cylinder for precise positioning. Base legs have two
8" x 2" polyolefin wheels with roller bearings and two
swivel casters with 4" x 1 5/16" self-lube polyolefin wheels. Color is
blue. Shipped assembled.
The 60" hand-operated lifter has
a hand crank tilt control. A few turns of the hand crank will tilt, and
empty the drum. Drum is returned to the upright position and lowered by
turning the release handle. The 72" hand-operated and electric
lifters have a pull chain and chain wheel to control tilting. Electric
lifter has an electric-powered hydraulic lift with 1 hp, 115 VAC, 60 Hz
single phase TEFC motor. Motor draws 12.8 amps at full load. Lifter also
has a hand lever control and an 8' long power cord with a 3-prong plug.
