  • Dr. Robert Boehm and Dr. Mohamed Trabia were panelists in the second (Design Education Committee) panel session is entitled "What should be in a designer's toolbox: an industry perspective." The panel was part of the ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences (IDETC 07).
As noted, the design community includes individuals who represent a broad spectrum of interests and diverse needs. This panel will present some perspectives on what topics need to be known by designers and thus the implications on how engineering design might be presented and taught at the university level. Although the end-result would be on impacts and concerns for design education, the panel specifically wants to emphasize the concerns of the practicing design engineers by looking at industrial perspectives. In the open discussion period with the audience, this panel will discuss the tools needed by today's designers and begin to develop the influence the needs of practicing industrial engineering designers should have on design education.

“The Vinings” community by Pinnacle Homes
    7395 Howell Mill Court
    Las Vegas, NV 89113

This unique partnership combines the efforts the College of Engineering and UNLV Center for Energy Research, Nevada Southwest Energy Partnership (NSWEP), Pinnacle Homes, ConSol, Nevada Power, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

What’s distinctive about this project is that two identical-looking, 1,610 square-foot homes have been built side-by-side; one the Zero Energy Home model and the other built using conventional construction practices. Both homes have been built with monitoring instruments discreetly imbedded during construction so that UNLV researchers can monitor the energy efficiency and consumption of each home.

Over an 18-month period, UNLV students and faculty from the College of Engineering will monitor the energy performance of the two homes. Real-time data from both structures will enable UNLV researchers to evaluate the energy consumption and cost savings.

Come and see the future of residential energy conservation technology, Thursday, September 29th at 1:00 p.m.
